Last November some students from 4º D ESO entered the competition Atumn around the World Competition held by Macmillan Magazine in its last issue, www.macmillan.es/Macmillan_Magazine.macmag.O.html It consisted of surfing the net looking for information related to three Autumn Festivities around the world: Sukkot (a Jewish festivity) , Changyang (a Chinese festivity) and Diwali (an Indian festivity) Students were given a sheet with different gap-filling activities and some web pages to get the required information:

www.holidays/net/sukkot/stop.htm , www.askhah.com , www.chinadaily.com

www.chinesefortunecalendar.com , www.bigeyedowl.co.uk

I think the competition was very rewarding due to different reasons. First of all students developed their reading skills, skimming and scanning the different texts included in the webpages. Besides, they used the internet, a tool they love and they are used to. In addition to this, they learnt about festivities, closely related to the sociocultural aspects dealt with in the English Syllabus at this level. Finally, they got a prize!

In my opinion teachers should take into account the net as a useful tool in the learning process making up their own activities or using the ones that have been already designed by others, a prize may be waiting for them!
